Lately I’ve been working quite hard on learning a new song on my guitar. A deceptively simple song that I just fell in love with. It should come as no surprise to anyone that it’s a country song. This is Country Heart after all.
I should have known better than to think the song would be quick to learn. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that prove to be the hardest. That has certainly been true with this song. Try as I have for the past 4 weeks I just could not get the instrumental bridge right. Over and over and over again I played those 4 bars that were getting the best of me. It seemed like the longer I practiced, the worse it got. How could 4 bars, just 16 beats, be stopping me in my tracks?
Well last night I beat them! Ha! The trick was to relax and just enjoy the song as I did the first time I heard it. To just let it flow through my heart and my hands and to turn off my brain and stop expecting perfection. I didn’t give up but decided that just playing it the best I could right now would be enough. And that’s when it all came together. And the sweet sound it made was beautiful.
Now hopefully I can do the same at my lesson tonight!
